Visserhok Primary School, found in rural Durbanville, has a set school uniform, like any other school, but because the majority of the kids attending this school come from impoverished backgrounds they have to wear civvies items to complete their uniform.
Malachi Place of Safety was established in 2005 after the Brummer family volunteered to open their home as a “safe house” for abused and abandoned children. The average time a child spends in the home is one year before the child is re-united with his or her family, goes into foster care or a children’s home. At Malachi, the children are provided with a loving, caring family environment, something many of them are not familiar with, and all the normal everyday needs of children, like food, clothing, medicine and education.
Old people have a lot of value to add! But they are often forgotten about. We work with Noah (Neighbourhood Old Age Homes) a local organisation that helps disadvantaged, vulnerable older people in meeting their basic needs. They set up communal houses for the Oldies, think of it as a digs for older folk, and also provide primary health care at their clinic, social and community activities among other things.
This little pre-school in the informal settlement of Goshen on the outskirts of Cathcart, Eastern Cape was our very first project. The name of the school in Xhosa means ‘longing for something nice.’ The school looks after 39 children under the age of five and is run on a government subsidy of R6000 a month. These funds are stretched between salaries, supplies and food for the children.
If you ever have the pleasure of Mrs Zonde’s company, you will be quick to find that she is one of the most remarkable women you will ever meet. Despite severe arthritis in her hands she continues to care for the sick on a daily basis, looking past her own pain in order to alleviate the pain of those who fall under her care. A modern day Florence Nightingale she is.
